Problems with agricultural academic institutions and Universities in Nepal 🌾 🥕

Image
As we all know, agriculture has major contribution to national GDP in Nepal. Approximately 66% of Nepalese people are engaged directly in agriculture for first source of income. In addition, more than 50% people have agriculture as second source of income in Nepal. However, our agriculture system is just subsistent since long back ago and mostly integrated with livestocks. In general, agriculture is significant economic contributor as well as an important daily subsistent way to live in Nepal.  The importance of agriculture has been understood by our ancestors during early civilization. The tradition of agriculture and farming has been inherited since that time and today's generation is still following the similar tradition and tools. It is very much known fact  that, agriculture is backbone of Nepalese economy, socio-economy, cultures and values.  The importance of agriculture in Nepal can not be easily ignored and in another hand, agricultural importance has been understood by ou

COVID-19 🦠 pandemic and Nepalese food security 🌾 🥒

Image
Food security in Nepal is always come as big concern.  Our agricultural system is recognized as  non-productive system. It is because that our farming system is highly rainfed and marginalized. Most of the farming system is still depending on natural rainfall and traditional way of faring. These  Problems  are limiting our agricultural system to be productive. Definitely farming under very low inputs such as fertilizers, irrigation and nutrient would not result in better output. Because of this reason, we are suffering from food insecurity since long time ago.   Photo: Rural women harvesting vegetable form her farm,  Photo source: USAID Even Nepal has taken significant steps to reduce the food insecurity in past several years, the hunger and malnutrition rate had not gone down. Most of the Nepalese women and children are still malnourished till date.  Meanwhile COVID-19 🦠 came as an important economic cause to slow down every aspect of economy including agricultural development world

Why commercialization is important for Nepalese agriculture 🌾 🍋 🍉 🥕 🥔????

Image
Agriculture in Nepal is being progressive towards commercialization, however, it is still being less than enough.  Although there are many  opportunities   and need for agriculture to be commercialize, many  obstacles  and problems  such as poor infrastructure, lack of proper technology and poor market facilities are hindering the growth.  Agricultural commercialization happens only when agricultural enterprises and/or agricultural sector  come as a whole single enterprise and rely on market for selling products. By commercialization of agriculture, agricultural production should require to go 'surplus' and should sell the products in the market rather being consumed in family. It means, production should go beyond the family consumption size.  There is a great need of agricultural commercialization in Nepal and especially Tarai/plain areas are highly potential for commercialization. In another way, high hills are potential for  agro-tourism . Tarai and/or plain areas have high

Agro-tourism challenges in Nepal💥

Image
Beside the profuse potential for agriculture based tourism in Nepal, there are challenges to flourish the for agro-tourism and it's sound development.              Photo: Amaltari homestay, source: Kinley ragan  Understanding ( कमजोर बुझाइ ) Many of the farming community in Nepal are residing on remote village and remotely access the education. The farming system is going in the same traditional way. Local people are perceiving that, this is it. Level of understanding to improve current farming system in economic way can be found as minimal among local community. Whoever even understand the importance of agriculture, they do not want to work as it is 'muddy work'. The very first thing to progress towards development is our 'understanding' and 'will thought'. If we do not 'understand' it does not make any sense for development later.  Labour scarcity (कामदार हरुको अभाब) Most of the local youth and active and literate population are in abroad for forei

Agro-tourism: Prospective future of Nepal 💚❤

Image
Agrotourism is new concept and rapidly growing at the international level. Being an agrarian country and having diverse geography from himalayas to tarai, Nepal has immense potential for agro-tourism and economic development. As agriculture has significant contribution to national GDP contribution, it would create synergetic effect on national income if both agriculture and tourism practices in integrated way. Because of having enchanting terraces, beautiful mountains and himalayas, streams and rich biodiversity; Nepal possess a great value for tourism and agriculture promotion.                  Photo : Nepalese secic beauty, source: Various internet search Agro-tourism is rapidly attracting concern globally and many countries such as China, Vietnam and Indonesia have already taken into action to promote agro-tourism for economic benefit. Even Though, Nepal has immense potential, there is not enough understanding for agro-tourism concept.  To some extent, Nepal also has recognized the

Problems in Nepalese agriculture 💥

Image
There are many  Problems  for agricultural development in Nepal. I have classified them based on my understanding and experiences A. Understanding level🧠 - Poor concept for agri-entrepreneurship -Understood/perceived agriculture is low class job/work Photo: Example of an agri-entrepreneurship, Source: Proactive Investors Australia B. Policy and Implementation  level -Poor agri-research facilities available from Government to solve farmer's problem  -Negligible concept to identify farmer's problem  -Very ineffective implementation for cultivable land promotion and protection policy: there is not control mechanism for land fragmentation and promoting and protecting cultivable land; no policy to utilize all cultivable land and not to left barren  -Government research is oriented for only screening objective, do not have problem solving objective in research -Government is oriented for subsistent cluster based improvement program  -No such commercialization scheme easily availabl

How can we shape our future agriculture in Nepal?

Image
Nepal has gifted for diverse geography and natural resources. The awesome himalayas to mountains to plains are not only eye soothing, but also an efficient reserve of diverse climate and biodiversity. In addition, these reserves have potential to support our agriculture system. Going through the ancient history to till date, the way to sustain daily life throughout the all geographic areas are Agriculture and nature is favouring agriculture in all aspects.  The practice of farming is inheriting to generation after generation over all areas . The abundance of natural resource and climatic variations over himalayas to plain areas within same time frame is favouring Nepalese agriculture to become a diverse farming system .  Considering all the natural abundances and our way to sustain daily life through agriculture since long history, we supposed to be in a successful position in agricultural development . Unfortunately, we could not explore our potential to optimum level yet .  Photo: r
